Business Administration and Public Policy (MBA/MPP)

The University of Michigan’s Graduate School of Business Administration (GSBA) and the Ford School of Public Policy offer a joint degree program, leading to the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Public Policy (MPP) degrees. The program is arranged so that all requirements for both degrees are completed in three years of enrollment. The program also requires a ten-week internship. Both degrees are awarded simultaneously.

Course of Study

During year one of the combined program, the student is required to complete the first year sequence of courses in either program. In the first summer, the student usually works on the required internship. In the second year, the other school’s first year sequence must be completed. In year three, the student will attend courses in both programs. Each institution will apply its own deferred admission standards to students who elect to take the first year in the other. Students who wish to begin with Public Policy should see a counselor in the business school to arrange an appropriate plan of study.

Degree Requirements

Students admitted to this joint degree program must satisfy the following:

Masters of Business Administration (MBA)—60 credit hours, including:

• The 30 credit hour MBA core (no credit is awarded for Business Administration core courses successfully waived by passing Placement Exams; credit must be earned with Business electives)
• 15 elective hours in Business Administration;
• 15 credit hours of transferable electives for the FSPP
• MBA communication requirement

Master of Public Policy (MPP)—48 credit hours, including:

• 21 hour core coursework
• 18 elective hours in FSPP
• 9 credit hours of transferable electives from the GSBA
• Participation in the Integrated Policy Exercise (IPE)

The total credit hours for the joint degree program will be at least 84 credit hours. Students can satisfy the core course requirements in the GSBA by passing approved examinations. No coursework completed prior to admission may be counted toward the MBA requirements of the dual program. In some cases, core courses in FSPP may be waived for students with prior comparable coursework. Electives may be substituted for waived courses.

Admission Requirements

Students must file separate applications to and be admitted by both schools. An application fee must accompany each application. Students must indicate specific dual degree program on both applications.
Students must take the GMAT for admission to the GSBA. The Ford School will accept the GMAT for applicants to joint degree program.

When courses from both schools are taken in one term, tuition will be assessed at either the Business School or the Rackham rate, whichever is higher. The combined degree program is not open to students who have earned either the MPP or MBA degree. However, students registered in the first year of either program may apply.
